12 Summer Camp Movies ‘In Development’

Wet Hot American Summer Sequel Prequel
Hints started dropping in 2011 when the cult movie celebrated its 10th anniversary and since then the talk has only increased of a movie that could possibly be set 10 years earlier than the original, which took place on the last day of camp at Camp Firewood on Aug. 18, 1981. That the same actors who are now more than a decade older would be playing characters significantly younger isn’t all that far-fetched consider the absurdity of the first but despite confirmation that the project is going to happen there still hasn’t been anything more than talk.

Walden Media acquired the rights to Josh Walk’s wonderful memoir about going back to summer camp the summer before his wedding and in 2010 it was announced that director Derek Martini (Lymelife) had signed on to direct but all has been quiet on that front since. It’s listed as being in pre-production with a question mark for release date on IMDB and it’s not mentioned on the Walden Media site at all.

Meatballs Remake
A Meatballs remake was announced in 2010 by Lionsgate, with John Whitesell attached to direct a script by Sean Anders and John Morris, but there hasn’t been much by way of any updates since then. The closest the classic 1979 movie came to a return to the big screen was when the movie poster appeared in the apartment of one of the characters in Meatballs director Ivan Reitman’s 2011 film No Strings Attached, which opened with a flashback to summer camp and was pretty terrible the rest of the way through.

Summer Camp Horror Movie
One genre I’ve never gotten into, even when it’s set at a summer camp, is horror so I won’t exactly be looking forward to the latest horror film set at summer camp being produced by the team behind the popular REC movies, but I’ll still be interested to see how it turns out. Shooting on the film, the directorial debut for Alberto Mariano, is expected to begin at the end of 2013.

littledarlingsLittle Darlings Remake
In what appeared to be an attempt to keep his Super 8 movie under wraps, J.J. Abrams announced he was doing a remake of the ’80s teen comedy back in 2010 but he never really had any intention of doing anything of the sort. If Little Darlings is ever going to be remade, Abrams won’t be the one doing it. It’s probably better off that way – as racy as the original was for its time, it’s hard to imagine what an updated version would be like.

The Original Provisionals
It’s kind of an odd name for a summer camp movie, but the plot sounds very intriguing. It’s about a couple of Vietnam veterans who work as counselors with inner city kids at a summer camp in the ’80s. Written by Christopher Scott Cherot, it’s listed as a project on the CinemaStreet website.

Yellow Day
Yellow Day is a faith-based film in development that sets a heart-warming love story at the fictional Camp Grace. The film has an ongoing web and social media presence but a release date for the film hasn’t been announced yet.

Status: Releasing this year

Seoul Searching
Seoul Searching is a movie recently announced by filmmaker Benson Lee (Planet B-BoyBattle of the Year: The Dream Team) based on Lee’s own experience as a teenager when he was sent by his parents to a summer camp in Seoul, South Korea, to get in touch with his roots. Lee has described the film as an ’80s-style teen comedy.

Camp Creepy Time Movie
DreamWorks acquired the rights to actress Gina Gershon’s Camp Creepy Time, a children’s book she wrote with her husband and published in 2007 about a kid who discovers the summer camp he is attending is staffed by aliens, but not much has been done with it. The movie was supposed to be a co-production with Nickelodeon.

camprulesbookCamp Rules Movie
A movie based on Jordan Roter’s young adult novel Camp Rules! is listed as being in development, but there’s scarce information beyond that and the book itself doesn’t appear have to been too popular when it was released in 2007. It has only four reviews on Amazon.com and comes up pretty low in search results. If you want to read the book, it’s going for pennies on the dollar.

Vampire Summer Camp
SLC Punk director James Merendino is helming this movie about a summer camp for youthful vampires which takes on a neighboring camp in a musical theatre competition – Twilight meets Camp Rock perhaps? – but it’s going to have to hurry before the whole vampire thing is no longer a thing. Oh wait, it might already be too late. It’s listed as being in pre-production, but it might be there for a while.

Status: Coming, supposedly, in 2013

Camp Chippewa
This indie film launched an ambitious Kickstarter campaign back in the fall, but didn’t get very far, only raising $550 in pledges of the $19,500 they had set as a goal.
