The Camp Ramah network of Jewish camps will be adding a ninth overnight camp in 2016 in Northern California.
Camp Ramah NorCal will be held near the shores of the Monterey Bay at the Monterey Bay Academy and has plans to host as many as 300 campers over three sessions. The decision was made to lease the 380-acre Seventh-Day Adventist boarding school campus after efforts of finding a permanent property had stalled.
The camp is being added to meet the needs of a growing Jewish population in the region. According to the Camp Ramah NorCal website, the Jewish population is approaching half a million in Northern California, making it the third largest Jewish community in the U.S. Camp Towanga and Camp Newman are the only other Jewish residential camps in the region.
“Increasing the number of beds in Jewish camps increases the opportunity for more kids to participate in the life-changing experience of camp,” the website states on its The Case for Camp Ramah in Northern California page.
Camp Ramah currently has overnight camps in southern California, the Poconos, the Berkshires, Wisconsin, Georgia, Canada, New England and Denver.
