Camps in Pop Culture: Camp Powhatan in ‘The Night Before’

Camp Powhatan, which closed in 1996, makes a cameo on the t-shirt of a character played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the 2015 movie The Night Before.

Levitt plays a character named Ethan who wears a t-shirt for the Maine camp in an emotional flashback scene late in the movie about three friends partying in New York City on Christmas.

The film’s director, Jonathan Levine, attended the camp as a kid and reportedly wanted to include the shirt in the movie about friendship because it would be something only his friends would recognize.

While Powhatan is no longer operating as a camp, the property is still in use as a camp run by the nonprofit Seeds of Peace.
