Carl Bernstein’s son revealed secret identity of Deep Throat at camp

Former FBI director Mark Felt admitted 10 years ago that he was the famous Deep Throat source for Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein’s reporting on the Watergate Scandal that brought down President Richard Nixon.

While the identity of the famed anonymous source was big news, anyone who attended summer camp with Carl Bernstein’s son in the late ’80s may have already known.

One of Jacob Bernstein’s summer camp friends, Chase Culeman-Beckman told the Hartford Courant in a 1999 article that he heard that Felt was Deep Throat from Bernstein at an exclusive day camp in Bridgehampton in the summer of 1988.

The article, published six years before Felt came clean  in a May 31, 2005 Vanity Fair article (Felt died three years later), included standard denials from “all corners” including Felt, but Culeman-Beckman turned out to be right, thus proving the story of a journalist’s son sharing secrets at summer camp.

For her part, Bernstein’s ex-wife, late filmmaker Nora Ephron told anyone who asked her who Deep Throat was. She says Carl never told her but that she figured it out and told their children, family members, friends and even strangers.
