Erin McKeown learned to play guitar at summer camp

Singer/songwriter Erin McKeown was interested in science before she was ever interested in writing songs, but a summer camp focusing on biology she attended at age 12 in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia had an impact on the career she has since forged as a singer-songwriter.

“It was a biology camp, but also where I learned to play guitar,” McKeown said of her camp experience in a 2006 interview with Daytrotter. “I would write little reports on snakes and plants then sit around singing songs with my friends.”

UPDATE: Erin McKeown responded to my tweet of this article earlier today and shared the web address for the camp. It’s called Nature Camp.
