Pixar animator, writer, director and voice actor Bob Peterson, who made his directorial debut with Up and also voiced the character of Dug, drew from his summer camp experience when he voiced one of the more memorable lines in the 2009 movie.
“I have just met you, and I love you.”
The inspiration for the line came from an experience Peterson had when he was a summer camp counselor in Ohio in the ’80s.
“The first week of camp, a kid ran up to me and threw his arms around me and said, ‘You’re my camp counselor! I love you!’” Peterson said in the movie’s production notes. “That was the key to Dug. Dug is the stream-of-consciousness of what we think a dog would be thinking. He’s emotional and loving and, at times, happily unaware of the reality surrounding him.”
