Fictional summer camps: Camp Grindlestone

Camp Grindlestone is the name of the camp in the “The Tale of Watcher’s Woods” episode of the ’90s Canadian-American anthology television series Are You Afraid of the Dark? The episode is from season three of the series, which originally aired in 1992-1993. Though the whole set-up of the show has a summer camp kind of feel with a campfire and people telling ghost stories, “The Tale of Watcher’s Woods” is one of only two episodes to take place in a summer camp setting (the other is “The Tale of the Manaha”).

In the episode, overachieving camper Sarah is a new camper at Camp Grindlestone and quickly becomes a target of ridicule for her cabin mates, who are jealous of all the badges she’s earned. Her cabin mates also try to scare her with a legend of Watcher’s Woods and the story of three campers who disappeared in 1919, but Sarah and the meanest of the cabin mates, Kelly, learn the hard way that the story is more than just legend when Kelly abandons Sarah in the woods and they both end up lost.

Not much is revealed about the fictional Camp Grindlestone, but we do learn that it’s been around for at least 75 years since the night Sarah and Kelly get lost in the woods is the 75th anniversary of the disappearance of the three campers. The episode is below.
