Josh Groban recalls ‘awkward’ summer camp audition

Singer Josh Groban has sold over 25 million records and in April released an album entirely of songs from the stage, but when he was in high school he had “an awkward high school camp moment” at Interlochen Arts Camp in Michigan.

“I had a big voice but I looked about 10 years old, and the kids laughed at me when I auditioned ’cause I was the least scary person you could imagine,” he said in a recent interview of his audition for Sweeney Todd. “And I got the role of, like, Broomsweep No. 4 and was killed by Judge Turpin in the first three minutes of the show.”
