New York Manhunt forces closure of summer camp

A Catholic summer camp in upstate New York has canceled the first week of its six-week summer program because of an ongoing manhunt in the area for two escape convicts.

Camp Guggenheim on Lower Saranac Lake was scheduled to begin its summer programs on Sunday, but a decision was made to cancel the first week, according to news reports.

According to a report from THOnline, a “spokeswoman for the diocese says the bishop is concerned about the safety of the children given that police are searching nearby woods for escaped prisoners Richard Matt and David Sweat.”

Matt and Sweat, both convicted murders, escaped from the maximum security Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora on June 6.
