Our America with Lisa Ling

Our America with Lisa Ling is a new American documentary series on OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network that is kind of a more serious version of Louis Theroux’s Weird Weekends or Strange Days with Bob Saget in which journalist Lisa Ling, of The View fame, explores aspects of American life that are obscure and more off the beaten path than what we typically see depicted in mainstream media.

On the March 8, 2011, episode entitled “Pray The Gay Away?” Ling explores gay Christianity from two angles – from gays who are seeking to live the heterosexual lives they believe God wants them to live and from those who seek to reconcile their sexuality with their Christian faith.

Summer camp comes into play in the 29th minute of the episode when Ling visits the Naming Project, a gay Bible camp in Minnesota, which Ling points out might just be the only place in America where worship comes after a Diva competition.

Whatever your religious leanings or perspective on sexuality, the episode is a powerful portrait of those most affected by the question posed in the episode’s title and is certainly one worthwhile for adults involved in running or working at summer camps to watch and discuss.
