PR pioneer and dedicated Camp Chingachgook volunteer dies

Ed Lewi was a public relations pioneer who served as the spokesman for the 13th Winter Olympics in Lake Placid and helped put Saratoga Race Course on the map, but outside the public relations industry he was also a dedicated summer camp volunteer.

So dedicated the building housing the dining hall, administrative offices and camp store for YMCA Camp Chingachgook was named Lewi Lodge in 1997. Lewi was a former camper, past chairman of the board of governors for the Kattskill Bay, New York camp and chaired multiple Capital Fund Campaigns.

“As a camper, staff member, and devoted alum, Ed Lewi helped transform YMCA Camp Chingachgook on Lake George into the jewel it is today,” David Brown, the Capital District YMCA president and CEO, was quoted saying when Lewi was presented with the Y’s lifetime achievement award in May.

Lewi’s charity wasn’t just limited to one camp. He was also involved with Double H Ranch, a camp in Lake Luzerne for children with serious illnesses and disabilities.

Lewi died on Friday, August 28 at age 81.
