We were introduced to the 16 adult campers returning to summer camp in the debut episode of USA Network’s reality competition show Summer Camp that debuted on July 11, and learned more about how the competition portion of the reality show will work.
The format is pretty standard as far as reality shows go – you meet the contestants and almost instantly the claws start to come out as insta-judgments are captured in interviews and personalities clash. You have the mean girl passing judgment, the nerdy guy and girl connecting over a Chewbacca bag, the awkward interactions of the conservative hunter and his gay bunkmate and more.
In many ways the first episode was similar to the real camp experience where so much happens so fast on the first night it all ends up being a blur. One key difference is that by the episode’s end one camper is put back on the bus home, and it isn’t because she’s homesick.
