Zélimo is a 2001 film about a Russian Jewish boy who goes to a Jewish summer camp in the Catskills in the summer of 1964, where he’s miserable and picked on mercilessly.
His mother is working at a nearby girls camp so he finds solace in visiting with his mom at the camp. Over the course of the summer, he has flashbacks to his childhood in Central Russia and his harrowing escape in 1959.
The boy’s time is made easier by Hector, a camp counselor, Cuban Jew, and macho warrior who takes Zelimo under his wing.
The film was written and directed by Aleks Rosenberg.
